How to Choose a Drain Cleaner

Choosing the right drain cleaner for your home can be quite confusing. There are so many different brands available in the market that it becomes difficult to choose. Here are a few tips to help you choose an effective drain cleaner.

Causes of Clogging - There may be many things that cause clogged drains. If your drains get clogged due to hair stuck inside, you must buy a drain cleaner along with a strainer to seize the hair and a drain brush that will enable you to drag the hair out of the drain.

Brands - Brands should not be important criteria when buying drain cleaners. You can also look for drain cleaners from a line of household products that you like when shopping. You can try two to three different drain cleaners to find out which one works best for you. This will help you buy the right drain cleaner for your home.

How to Clean and Freshen Your Garbage Disposal

The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in an active home. The family gathers there to eat their meals each day, often lingering over coffee or dessert to catch up with each other’s lives. Guests arrive on holidays and often congregate in the kitchen as the other areas of the home overflow with company.

Cleaning the Garbage Disposal

Even though the garbage disposal is designed to pulverize and remove kitchen waste from food products, food particles often become trapped in the nooks and crannies of the garbage disposal and kitchen drainpipe. This provides the perfect environment for mold and bacteria to grow and create unpleasant odors, as well as unhealthy spores.

Method 1: Pour one half cup of baking soda down the kitchen drain. Carefully pour one cup of white vinegar down the drain on top of the baking soda. Place the drain stopper in the sink to close off the drain. If you have a double sink, you should do this for both of them. The mixture will fizz and make a bit of noise or fizzing sounds. Allow this to work its magic for a few minutes while you boil some hot water. Use a full teakettle or medium size pot of water. Once this has boiled, pour it down the drain.

Method 2: Using a clean container, mix a gallon of water with one tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach. Carefully and slowly, pour the solution down the drain and allow it to sit for several minutes. Flush the drain thoroughly with cold water for several minutes.

Freshening the Garbage Disposal

Maintaining a clean garbage disposal using one of the above methods will help to keep it smelling fresh and odor free. Additionally, you can encourage this by grinding ice cubes in the garbage disposal to clean the cutting blades. Simply place several cubes in the drain and grind.

If you want to add a little bit of scent to the area, you can add rinds from any of the citrus fruits in the drain with the ice cubes. The citrus fruits include oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits.

3 Ways To Improve Your Water Heater Efficiency

Establishing water heater efficiency is one of the most important ways to reduce home energy usage. In this article, we will present three simple ways that you can make your water heater more efficient. As a last resort, you may even consider replacing your old water heater with a newer energy efficient model.

1. Convert to Gas
Natural gas is far less expensive to heat with than electricity. Converting to a gas-fired water heater could save the cost of the water heater in the first 2 years of operation, and can last for 15 to 20 years without needing any sort of repair or replacement.

2. Turn Down the Heat
Hot water heaters have an adjustable thermostat. While it is not advised to turn the heat up much because it could burn out the heating elements, turning the heat down will save you money right away. After all, most of our hot water usage is combined with cold water anyway, so by turning down the heat you are also reducing the water required.

3. Use Additional Insulation
Consider building a cabinet around your water heater, and insulating it. Modern water heaters are not too wasteful as far as radiating heat is concerned, but adding more insulation is never a bad idea. Box out the area around the heater, and line it with R19 or some other suitable insualtion.
